Responsibilities of a Ship’s Captain<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being the Head of Deck Department of a Ship, Captain is responsible for navigating the vessel to its destination along with its cargo\/ passengers. From Voyage Planning to Ship Stability, receipt\/ delivery of its consignments, almost every aspect outside engine room rests on Captain’s shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The captain ensures that the ship complies with local and international laws and complies also with company and flag state<\/a> policies.[1]<\/a><\/sup> The captain is ultimately responsible, under the law, for aspects of operation such as the safe navigation of the ship,[3]<\/a><\/sup> its cleanliness and seaworthiness,[4]<\/a><\/sup> safe handling of all cargo,[5]<\/a><\/sup> management of all personnel,[6]<\/a><\/sup> inventory of ship’s cash and stores,[7]<\/a><\/sup> and maintaining the ship’s certificates and documentation.[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of a shipmaster’s particularly important duties is to ensure compliance with the vessel’s security plan, as required by the International Maritime Organization<\/a>‘s ISPS Code<\/a>.[9]<\/a><\/sup> The plan, customized to meet the needs of each individual ship, spells out duties including conducting searches and inspections,[10]<\/a><\/sup> maintaining restricted spaces,[10]<\/a><\/sup> and responding to threats from terrorists, hijackers, pirates, and stowaways.[11]<\/a><\/sup> The security plan also covers topics such as refugees<\/a> and asylum seekers<\/a>, smuggling, and saboteurs.[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n
